As always the Northerns Junior Closed tournament was a tense affair with players using the last chance to improve or consolidate their positions on the provincial ladder in order to get selected to the provincial teams.

The selection criteria takes into account each player’s record against the others over the whole season, starting with the Start of season tournament in September and culminating in the NJSA Closed. The committee met right after the prize giving to select the teams and invitation letters went out on Monday (see the announcement elsewhere on the website).

In all the excitement, let’s not forgive who were crowned the NJSA champions for the year:

Winners Boys Girls
u19 Reece Mclachlan Helena Coetzee
u16 Damian Groenewald Awande Malinga
u14 Luhann Groenewald Jordin Phillips
u13 Patrick Weir Chanté Leppan
u11 Wian de Bruin Elzandri Janse van Rensburg

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to the host Uitsig or a very successful tournament.

A small but passionate crowd was entertained with squash of a high standard on the final evening of the NSA Closed tournament. [4] Gary Naidoo proved that he is in unstoppable form to beat [2] Kyle Maree 3-1 in the men’s A section. [3] Andrew Martin upset [1] Ruan Olivier to take third place after a humdinger of a 5-setter where he fought back from 0-2 down.

In some other notable results young Damian Groenewald beat Nell van der Merwe 3-1 for 5th place and Blaine Verhage took 7th place after overcoming Jason Phillips 3-2 in another closely fought match.

Helena Coetzee was in sublime form to win the ladies final 3-0 over Kim McDonald. Third place went to Amy Farrell.

The men’s B section final was cancelled due to Sven Claassen picking up an ankle injury in his semi final match, so Pieter Albertyn won by default. In the 3/4 playoff Wayne Muller was responsible for Barry Coetzee’s second successive loss by the same margin of 9-11 in the 5th set. Innes de Vries was 5th after beating Brandon Thomas 3-2.
