The Northerns Junior Closed tournament this past weekend delivered some exciting squash in all the age groups. The fact that the finals ran late with more than an hour showed just how tough the competition was. Well done to all the players, parents and organisers for making it such a successful tournament.

Please find the draw for this weekend’s tournament below. Just a few very important notes:
- We are using Pretoria Country Club (PCC) and CBC Old Boys (CBCOB). Please check carefully where you are playing. Boys under 11 and 13 play at CBCOB on Friday and Saturday and at PCC on Sunday. Boys under 14 play at CBCOB on Saturday only, Friday and Sunday at PCC. All other age-groups play at PCC for the duration of the tournament. Entrance to CBCOB is the same entrance as Virgin Active in George Storrar Avenue (for GPS purposes).
- You have to be at the courts at least 30 minutes before your scheduled time.
- I have tried to accommodate all playing problems asked for as far as possible.
- I cannot reschedule any matches now as all times have now been posted.
- If you are playing in the 2nd round of the day, you have to mark and referee for the 1st round as well as after your own match!
- You cannot change playing times unless cleared with the tournament organiser, your AGR or the tournament referee.
- NB no-shows and players withdrawing without doctor’s notes will be penalised by NJSA in the form of a tournament ban or possible exclusion from future teams.

- Balls: under 11 and 13 – double yellow dot, under 14 – 19 – green dot.
As this is a very important tournament, draws will be redone in the case of withdrawals. Please check your e-mails and the website regularly for any changes!!

A capacity crowd was entertained with top squash in two very different finals on Friday night at the Pretoria Country Club.
The ladies final was a tense and emotional affair with lots of contact, lets, strokes and arguing about the referee’s calls. In between the two ladies played great squash. Nouran el Torky took the first game but in the next two she didn’t have answers to Nadine Shahin’s clever variations. Shahin sent her all over the court and used her cross court drop to great effect.
El Torky wasn’t going to take it lying down and fought back to take the match to a decider with a narrow 14-12 win in the 4th. Typical of the evening the last game produced 3 “no let” calls in the first 5 points. El Torky made too many mistakes and hit a few loose shots from which Shahin took full advantage with her killer volleys and drops to close out the match 11-5.
Taking into account that she is only 16, Shahin delivered a commendable performance. The final score was 9/11,11/7,11/6,12/14,11/5.
In the men’s final 3rd seeded Englishman Tom Ford took on 4th seeded Muhammad Saqib Yousaf from Pakistan. Yousaf started strongly and went up 6-0 before hitting 2 tins to give Ford his first points. The strong contingent of Pakistani supporters were however soon quiet as Ford took a grip on the game that he never relinquished until the end. With patient lengths setting up unplayable drop shots and excellent movement to every corner of the court, Ford started outplaying Yousaf.
In the third Yousaf had a brief period where it seemed he could make a comeback but the patience game seemed to be unsuited to his preferred shot playing style. Ford won the match in 38 minutes, less than half the time it took him to beat local player Thoboki Mohohlo in the quarter finals. It was also a welcome change from earlier in the evening that the match had minimum instances of interference, with both players moving well to and away from the ball.
The final score was 11/8,11/5,11/6.
In the A section tournament Andrew Martin beat Jason Kershaw 14/12, 11/6, 13/11 in the final, with Lawrence Kuhn coming 3rd. Sachika Ingale beat Karen Schultz in the ladies A section final 11/5, 5/11,11/8, 6/11, 13/11.

Come and watch world class players play in the final at Pretoria Country Club on Friday evening.
There were great semi final matches all round. Two 5 setters in the Ladies event with both losers looking the stronger opponents but not able to convert at the crucial moments. The first all Egyptian clash was quite the fiesty battle. Everything was left on the court as the two gave everything physically and mentally to try and convert in their favour. The lower seed being the victor showing determination and fight in both cases. All round potential from all 4 players for the future, all showing great skill, athleticism and willingness to fight.
As for the men both victors fought through 3-1. Tom showing greater skill level and great ball control, Rehman had no answers. Piedro fought his hardest physically as he always does showing just the athlete he is but the Pakistan man edged through on sheer skill level and focus.

The NSA open produced some fantastic squash on Monday. Unfortunately Anthony Graham injured his ankle. There were two great come backs from 2 down – Farrah Sterne and Amaad Fareed.
The match of the day for Tuesday according to some of the players, will be Oliver Plett and Piedro Schweertman taking each other on. Cheyna Tucker and Lauren Siddall will also battle it out a second time in 5 Days.
