In the men’s final of the Northerns PSA Satellite tournament between JP Brits and Kelvin Ndhlovu on Sunday, it was the 2nd seeded Brits that eventually came out on top after 5 bruising games. Alexa Pienaar made it seem slightly easier but it was nevertheless a hard fought 3-0 win for her over Jennifer Preece in the ladies final.

It was telling that only in the men’s D-section the final wasn’t a 5-setter but with the amount of time it took for Henco Hefer to beat Hildsley Noome 3-1, it could just as well have been. In the men’s C-section Justin Cook beat Mwansa Chileshe 3-2.

Damian Groenewald came back from 0-2 down to win the men’s B-section final 3-2 against Gerard Mitchell.

The Northerns PSA Satellite tournament this coming weekend at Pretoria Country Club promises to be an extremely entertaining affair. With 80 entries headed by Kelvin Ndhlovu, JP Brits, Gary Naidoo and Blessing Muhwati in the men and Alexa Pienaar, Helena Coetzee, Jennifer Preece and Tayla Diepenbroek in the ladies, all sections are very strong. The lowest men’s C-section players are reserve league strength.

Here are the draws for the first round: 2019 NSA PSA Closed Satellite tournament.

If you can’t get to the courts the results will be updated regularly here on the Northerns website. The finals will take place around 12h00 onwards on Sunday and that is not to be missed.

On Thursday night it was PCC and Harlequins who walked away with the winners’ trophies for the Men and Ladies 1st league sides respectively, after a hard fought 7 rounds of Blitz league.

PCC beat Centurion 13-3 with only Sam Siame bending the knee against JP Brits in the number 1 position, losing 1-3. The rest of the PCC team of Nell van der Merwe, Mikael Clayton and Craig Ruane all got the better of their Centurion counterparts Jason Phillips, Xander Robinson and Pieter Albertyn and the scores were 3-0 in all 3 those matches.

Harlequins Ladies narrowly beta Tuks 8-6 in the last round of the ladies Blitz round robin to take honours with 54 points, 14 ahead of Tuks in second place.

In the new Men’s reserve Blitz league PHSOB beat Uitsig by 16-3 in the final.

Here are the full results of the 2019 Blitz league: Blitz League 2019.

The inaugural Lower League Blitz tournament ended on a high note on Saturday when all the finals were played at PHSOB. The format was Swiss pairing draws of 8 in 5 sections, which meant each player had to play 3 matches – 1 on Friday and 2 on Saturday.

The winners of the 5 sections are pictured below, and here are the full results of the tournament: NSA Lower League Blitz 15-16 Feb 2019.

Winners from left to right (section in brackets): Warren Mallon (B), Jesse Lessing (A), Karen Claasen (E), Neville Sullivan (D) and Stefan Pieterse (C).

In accordance with the Northerns participation and selection criteria for 2019 the preliminary ladders were compiled from positions at the time of the 2018 Growthpoint Interprovincial tournament and subsequent league results.

Clubs are requested to submit further results from internal competitions like club championships and play-offs for league teams to the Northerns administrator at admin@northerns.co.za to be taken into account to finalise the ladder before the 2019 league starts. Blitz league results will also be taken into account but any historical results received after the start of the 2019 league on 27 February will not be considered.

Once finalised the ladder will be shown with and without external players. For now the combined ladder is shown.

Players are reminded to familiarise themselves with the requirements to represent the province this year.
