A very successful and enjoyable NMSA Closed tournament came to an end on Saturday with 25 matches played during the morning. With player numbers up 40% on last year and competition strong in all 7 sections, the final rounds were as tough as expected.

Winners received prizes from Cell C, Die Oog holiday resort and private sponsors, as well as the prestigious NMSA floating trophies.

The winners and runners-up in each section were:

  • Men 35-39: Craig Ruane & Brian Farham
  • Ladies Open: Sharon Cousins & Mandi Joubert
  • Men 40-44: Ashwell Jenneker & Mark Southwood
  • Men 45-49: Peter McLachlan & Gielie du Toit
  • Men 50-54: John McLachlan & Kyle Potgieter
  • Men 55-59: Hugh Wallace & Steve Artman

The next stop for the masters players is the World Masters tournament that takes place in September in Johannesburg and then the only remaining event is the doubles IPT in November.

This year we don’t have a singles IPT so we’re making our Northerns Masters Closed a big tournament. The dates are from 18 to 23 July. Play will start on the Monday and the finals will be on the Saturday. Most players will have Friday evening off and either Wednesday (ladies) or Thursday (men).

We’re in the process of negotiating attractive prizes to add to the prestigious trophies that are always awarded at the Closed. We’re asking people or companies to sponsor more prizes, even if only for one section. Please contact us and let us know what you could contribute – a few bottles of wine, vouchers, equipment, clothing or whatever you choose.

We’re specifically looking for a cash sponsor or 2 to contribute enough to enable us to do a “Skaapbraai” at the prize giving function on the Saturday.

Everyone who enters will get a unique long sleeve dry fit warm-up shirt as part of the entry – a practical memento that is worth more than the meagre R180 entry fee!

Read the conditions of entry on the tournament page on the Northerns website and enter online. Entries are open until Friday, 8 July 2016 – click to enter.

This is the Northerns Masters tournament that is played over 4 weeks, starting next Monday 18 April. Closing date for entries is this Friday 15 April. Enter here (click on the link).
