Magalan Pather won the Men’s section and Karla Hunt took honours in the Ladies’ section of the NMSA Satellite 2 tournament that was held at PHSOB over the weekend of 24-26 August. Although there were only a small number of entries everyone enjoyed the squash and it allowed some players to qualify for participation in the IPT.

Five players successfully defended their NMSA Closed titles in the final round of the tournament that took place on Saturday. Craig Ruane won the final of the Men 35-39, Trevor Wilkinson ended tops in the Men 50-54, Johnny Orsmond retained the Men 55-59 title, Gordon Daniel took honours in the Men 60-64 and Johanna (Sussie) Boonzaaier won the Ladies 35-44 section.

The Northerns Masters Squash Association hosts the NMSA Closed championship from 12 to 16 June this year at a number of clubs around the city. The Closed is our premier tournament for the year and is used as qualifier and ranking tournament for the Inter Provincial Tournament (IPT) teams to represent Northerns in East London from 7 to 12 September.

The NMSA 2012 Satellite 1 tournament was completed on Sunday, 25 March. The winner of the A-section was Richard Twali, who beat runner-up Musa Malinga 3-1 in the final. The A-section plate winner was Piet Jordaan.

The NMSA Closed tournament finals on Saturday ended a very successful tournament on a high note. There were 12 sections in 6 men’s and 2 ladies age groups. All the finals were played at Centurion, followed by the prize giving and a Skaapbraai social sponsored by Centurion Squash.

The section winners in the men’s competition were:

  • 35-39 A – Craig Ruane, runner-up Richard Twali
  • 35-39 B – Ian Miller, runner-up Koch de Jager
  • 40-44 A – Mike Hambly, runner-up Peter McLachlan
  • 40-44 B – Wimpie van Rensburg, runner-up LC van der Merwe
  • 45-49 A – Conrad van der Merwe, runner-up John McLachlan
  • 45-49 B – Pieter Kellerman, runner-up Izak Smith
  • 50-54 A – Trevor Wilkinson, runner-up Kobus Steyn

NMSA Closed 2011

The first 3 rounds of the NMSA Closed take place from 18-20 July 2011 and the finals are on Saturday, 23 July 2011, to be followed by a Skaapbraai and social hosted by Centurion Club. Games will be played at Centurion and Kentron courts and depending on the number on entries, also at other courts still to be decided.

This tournament is an opportunity to qualify for participation in the 2011 Inter Provincial Tournament (IPT) in Port Elizabeth from 2-7 September 2011.
